Why we use Shurley English
If grammar has fallen on hard times, it is no doubt due to the difficulty teachers and parents have had in teaching it. Like math, grammar appears full of abstractions and challenging concepts that do not seem to have an immediate benefit to the student. Yet the benefits of grammar for reading, composition, and language acquisition are tremendous. At Beacon Hill, we believe these challenges are more than overcome by the curriculum we use, Shurley English. This program has students doing things from an early age that you will not believe. It uses winsome chants, simple daily exercises, and jingles to help students learn and retain difficult concepts.
Although, Shurley English includes instruction in composition, we prefer to use the Institute for Excellence in Writing in the Grammar Stage. See our Grammar School Composition page.

The following link gives an example of a daily Shurley Grammar exercise. The majority of students in this video are new to Shurley Grammar, and have learned this “Question/Answer Flow” exercise within the last several months. They have also never seen this sentence before.
