History

We use the Story of the World history curriculum but modify it for our special needs.  We teach through the major events and people of world history every three years.  The whole school studies the same chapter each week.  Consequently, parents are able to teach all their students the same lesson whatever their age.  The first time through the cycle, students become familiar with the events of Western Civilization and are read stories describing the event.  The second time through, students read supplemental chapters that fill out the history to incorporate all of world history.

Here is an example of the activity guide we use with Story of the World.

Additionally, all students memorize a history chant developed by Classical Conversations.  In five minutes, students recite an entire timeline from Creation to present with gestures.  You can see an example of the history chant here.

The three-year cycle of world history is broken down as follows:

Year 1–Ancient History through Early Middle Ages

Year 2–Middle Ages through Early Modern

Year 3–Early Modern to Present

At home, students construct a beautiful, bound timeline that follows the events studied in class.  The timeline we use is found here.
