Philosophy

At Beacon Hill we have a distinct vision for education that has shaped our school.  At the beginning of our planning, we determined to respect four values:

1) We want to educate for Christian discipleship.

Whether our children became Ivy League grads, wealthy, or “successful,” we have believed from the beginning that our chief calling as parents is to raise our children into a knowledgable, faithful relationship with the Lord.  We determined that the Scriptures would be taught exhaustively and intensively to our students, that they would be taught to appreciate life in the church, and would thus encourage them to eternal life and fruitfulness in the Lord’s work.

2) We want to use a classical form of education.

While we recognize that the classical foundations of our country are eroding, and this is probably to be lamented, we are not uncritical fans of Greece and Rome.  We are impressed, however, with the aims and methods of classical education: teaching children how to think, rather than mere subject matter; teaching children to love what is good and beautiful; teaching them to speak eloquently and reason carefully.  Classical education has indeed fallen on hard times these past 100 years, but we maintain that this is was rejected for less-than-honorable reasons.

3) We want parents to be as involved as possible.

The Bible teaches that education is the responsibility of parents, whether they employ teachers or give instruction themselves.  In respect of this, Beacon Hill has sought every way to make parents involved in our school.  This is the genesis of our Hybrid program, where parents teach two days a week.  It is also the reason we require parents to volunteer throughout the year.  At Beacon Hill, you will always see parents about leading a reading group, supervising recess, or teaching a special art unit.

4) We want our education to remain affordable.

Our desire is to reach as broad of a representation from the church community as possible.  We in no way want to be a school merely for elite upper class families.  We want to be a school that upper class families would desire, but we also want to be a school that middle and lower class families can find within reach.  You will find that Beacon Hill’s tuition rates are lower than many, if not most, private schools in Ventura County.

Our Mission Statement

In light of these values, the Beacon Hill Classical Academy mission statement is

We labor alongside church families to train young disciples in the Christian liberal arts.

That is, we labor alongside families (value 3), church families (value 4), to train young disciples . . . Christian (value 1), in the . . liberal arts (value 2).  This is in short what we want to do at Beacon Hill.
